The world is an unpredictable place, but there are some constants that we can all agree upon; the beauty of sleeping in on weekends; the healing power of tea, and, sadly, the lethal danger of traditional cigarettes.
Who would’ve thought that harvesting a weed, lacing it with numerous chemicals, burning it, and sucking in the smoke could be so bad for you? If you think about it, a traditional cigarette is the only product that can kill you if follow the instructions and use it correctly (those who kill themselves with other products – either accidentally or by design – are using those products incorrectly).
Smoking also must rank among the most unpopular habits among its own participants. No jogger wants to quit jogging; every keen cook will happily do so for their entire life; a football fan will always be a football fan. But every smoker, on some level, wants to stop smoking.
We’re sure you know this, and we sympathise: Conventional smoking is hard to quit, both because of the addictive nature of nicotine and the unconscious habits that it forms.
Smoking is dangerous: Proof is in the stats
You’ve heard from everyone that it’s dangerous, but the hard data is even scarier than you think. According to our own Department of Health, 50% of all smokers will die from smoking-related illnesses. Let’s pause for a paragraph to let that sink in for a moment. Take five seconds to soak that in…50%.
There’s more: 90% of lung cancers are caused by smoking; and 7,000 people die in Ireland every year from smoking-related diseases. That last number is even more staggering when you consider that Ireland is roughly half the population of London.
Traditional smoking can cut up to 10 to 15 years off your life, but it’s not just your own health you’re jeopardising; a non-smoker living with a smoker has a 25% increased chance of lung cancer and 30% increased chance of heart disease. Passive smoke exposure can even increase the risk of a stroke by up to 82%.
Try vaping instead of smoking
We know that it’s hard to quit. Believe us. Much of the craving lies in the association; the first smoke in the morning with a coffee; the cigarette after a meal or a smoke with a drink.
