“Quitting smoking is the most effective means by which smokers can avoid the premature death and disability caused by smoking.” These are the opening words from Nicotine without Smoke: Tobacco Harm Reduction, a report by the Royal College of Physicians.
The report was released on Thursday April 28 2016 and addresses several key issues regarding electronic cigarettes and the potential they have to prevent the disability and premature death of people in Ireland who still smoke tobacco.
If you are one of the 1 million people still smoking tobacco in Ireland and think switching to electronic cigarettes may help you quit, what steps should you take in order to make the leap?
Identify the Right Electronic Cigarette for You
There are many products to choose from and so finding the right one is not always as easy as you might think. As a newcomer to vaping, there are 2 options worth considering. The first one is a cigalike electronic cigarette. This is a popular choice for many people as they look like cigarettes and are clean and easy to use.
The second option is to consider a vaping device, such as the VIP Mini, that gives you lots of choice when it comes to e-liquid flavours, but is still compact enough to carry with you wherever you go.
Don’t be Afraid to Take your Time
Try setting a transition period, where you slowly phase in using your electronic cigarette and phase out smoking cigarettes, but don’t make the mistake of doubling up. Depending on how much you smoke, going down to around 3 cigarettes per day and interspersing vaping sessions, may prove to be a good starting point.
Take a Consistent Approach
Always make sure you have your electronic cigarette with you and that it is charged, this way you are less likely to revert to cigarettes in times of need.
Why Electronic Cigarettes May Help
It is widely acknowledged that nicotine is an addictive substance, but people’s attachment to traditional cigarettes doesn’t end there. A lesser acknowledged fact is that factors, such as the hand to mouth action along with other habitual actions, also keep smokers clinging to cigarettes. When you substitute to vaping, you keep the nicotine and many of the other associated behaviours.
Keep Your Eye on the Prize
Perhaps the most important thing to do is keep reminding yourself why you are choosing to use an electronic cigarette. The Nicotine without Smoke: Tobacco Harm Reduction report concludes with these words.
“Large-scale substitution of e-cigarettes, or other non-tobacco nicotine products, for tobacco smoking has the potential to prevent almost all the harm from smoking in society. Promoting e-cigarettes, NRT and other non-tobacco nicotine products as widely as possible, as a substitute for smoking, are therefore likely to generate significant health gains in the UK.”
