First EU Rules on Electronic Cigarettes Introduced

The EU has introduced new anti-tobacco legislation, which includes larger health warnings on cigarette packaging, as well as the first rules on electronic cigarettes. An agreement was reached after governments in the European Parliament resolved a dispute over the regulation for e-cigarettes.

Under the rules, most  e-cigarettes will be sold as consumer products rather than medical devices as many governments wanted. Also included in  the new legistlation is the banning of fruit-flavoured cigarettes, and the phasing out of menthol cigarettes by 2020. The new legislation is expected to come into force in the New Year.

The news on this new legislation was featured on the RTÉ News in mid-December.
