The History of E-Cigarettes
Vaping (which it’s fair to say is taking the world by storm) seems like a modern, even futuristic invention – a cigarette-like alternative that doesn’t burn dangerous, chemical-laced nicotine, and instead creates a vapour. But its journey, from humble beginnings in a faraway country to your pocket or purse has taken decades.
Who invented e-cigarettes? How did it start? And where did it begin?
Here’s a rundown of some of the key moments in the history of e-cigarettes…
Key Moments in the history of e-cigarettes
1963: A design for vaping is patented in the United States by a man named Herbert A. Gilbert, but the technology wasn’t up to scratch. Also, in the 1960s (when people smoked in cinemas, planes and even hospitals) the market wasn’t ready for a cigarette substitute.
2003: The e-cigarette was invented in China by Hon Lik, a 52 year old pharmacist, inventor and smoker. Lik’s father reportedly died of lung cancer, which many say motivated the inventor to pursue his dream.
2004: A slightly different design for vaping is finally released to the domestic market in China. It’s an immediate success.
2006: Vaping is introduced in Europe, and thus began its international journey.
2007: Vaping enters the American market, cementing its place on the world stage.
2012: Nicotine and Tobacco Research publishes a study, entitled “Electronic Cigarettes: Effective Nicotine Delivery After Acute Administration,” which explores nicotine intake with different electronic cigarette devices.
2013: The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency announce will regulate e-cigarettes as medicines from 2016 when new European tobacco laws come into force.
2014: Numerous studies of vaping are accumulated, culminating in this systematic review. It concludes that: “Currently available evidence indicates that electronic cigarettes are by far a less harmful alternative to smoking and significant health benefits are expected in smokers who switch from tobacco to electronic cigarettes. Research will help make electronic cigarettes more effective as smoking substitutes and will better define and further reduce residual risks from use to as low as possible, by establishing appropriate quality control and standards.”
Present day: Vaping is helping millions of former smokers stay off cigarettes, and millions more begin their life without cigarettes. Vaping is commonly available in dozens of countries across the world, including Ireland, much of South and Central America, the E.U., China, Australia, the United States, much of Asia, and Israel.
The popularity of e-cigarettes is highlighted in the number of vaping related events and cafe’s opening up. The first vaping cafe was opened in London last year and we’re sure that Ireland will follow suit.
There are also many vaping festivals beginning to pop up worldwide. Vapefest is an annual festival for vapers in Ireland. The first Irish Vapefest was held in 2012 and a crowd of over 250 people showed up to a hotel outside Portlaoise. By 2013, the size of the crowd had doubled to 500 with over twenty vendors displaying, making it the biggest vaping event ever held in Ireland.
Since its invention, vaping has been adapted and finessed by numerous companies. It’s not a product unique to any company (like say, the iPod), instead, think of it like a car – a product that many make, but not everyone perfects. VIP takes pride in creating high-end, safe, dependable and chic vaping products. We are the high end car of the vaping market.
