Recent studies carried out in America have shown that, despite its bad reputation, the use of Nicotine in e cigs may have some positive effects on the human body. Researchers at Texas A&M University found that Nicotine improves brain function and may help prevent degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

The researchers made the point that the negative effects of smoking tobacco far outweigh such positive effects and that Nicotine has to be consumed separately from tobacco to make the positive attributes worthwhile.

“Smoking is only one possible route of administration of the drug and our work shows that we shouldn’t write-off Nicotine completely.” Dr. Ursula Winzer-Serhan, lead researcher at Texas A&M University.

Beyond the Cloud is a documentary by filmmakers Ghyslain Armand and Sébastien Duijndam. The film examines the vaping phenomenon and how electronic cigarettes are “seen as a miracle by some.” but are “considered a new evil by others.”

The film also contains an interesting historical perspective on the rise of tobacco smoking and the devastating effect it has had on millions of people throughout the world.

The level of access Armand and Duijndam have gained to both the tobacco industry and the electronic cigarette industry is impressive and makes for a well-balanced piece of work. Beyond the Cloud is insightful, entertaining and a well-crafted documentary that will have you glued to the screen.

The US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) proposed regulations on electronic cigarettes and vaping products are far more draconian than the TPD regulations that are currently being phased in in the UK.

The biggest bone of contention, particularly amongst smaller product manufacturers in the US, is the proposed process of application for products. It is estimated that the cost of application, per product, could be as much as $500,000. This would see many smaller companies unable to afford to complete the applications and, hence, go out of business.

Those who are opposed to the new FDA regulations argue that the legislation plays in to the hands of big business and the tobacco companies, while those who support the new regulations say they will “protect youth by restricting their access to tobacco products”.

The ramifications of more regulation on vaping are echoed around the world, with some counties viewing electronic cigarettes as a good way to help people stop smoking while others claim they are too harmful to not regulate.

What are your thoughts, should electronic cigarettes be subject to increased regulation or are the current regulations sufficient?
